What the generator applies.

Rounding and % Daily Values follow 21 CFR 101.9 and 101.36, with each rule cited in the code. The citation on each row is the provision the generator follows.

  • Rounding
Calories to 5 or 10, fats to 0.5 or 1 g, sodium to 5 or 10 mg, cholesterol to 5 mg, carbohydrates and protein to 1 g, with the "less than" wording where the regulation allows it.
    21 CFR 101.9(c)(1)-(7)
  • Vitamins and minerals
Amounts to the units of the reference table; % Daily Value in 2, 5 and 10 point steps; Vitamin D, calcium, iron and potassium always declared, in that order.
    21 CFR 101.9(c)(8)
  • Servings
Whole numbers, or the nearest half serving between 2 and 5, with "about" when the number was rounded.
    21 CFR 101.9(b)(8)
  • Dual columns
Per-container values come from the unrounded per-serving amount times the servings, then rounded on their own.
    21 CFR 101.9(e)(6), (b)(12)(i)
  • Layout
7, 3 and 0.25 point rules, bold nutrient names that are not indented, 16 pt "Calories" and a 22 pt calorie figure, nutrients at 8 pt.
    21 CFR 101.9(d); Part 101 App. B
  • Supplement Facts
Amounts that round to zero are left off, "<1%" where a small amount rounds to 0%, the * and † symbols with their footnotes, blends heaviest first.
    21 CFR 101.36(b)-(c)
  • Outside the box
The ingredient list sits directly below the panel; the structure/function disclaimer is bold, boxed and at least 1/16 inch tall.
    21 CFR 101.4(g); 101.93(c)-(e)

Questions

Does the generator round the numbers for me?

Yes. Enter the actual amounts per serving from your formulation or lab report. The generator applies the increments in 21 CFR 101.9(c): 47 calories prints as 45, and 143 mg of sodium prints as 140 mg. Percent Daily Values are calculated from the unrounded amounts, which 21 CFR 101.9(d)(7)(ii) permits.

Why is the download button disabled?

Downloads stay locked while the check list shows an error, such as a missing mandatory nutrient or a value that is not a number. The preview is marked Incomplete until every error is fixed. Warnings and notes do not block the download.

How is the file sized for print?

The SVG is drawn in points, where 72 points equal one inch, at the type sizes and rule weights of 21 CFR 101.9(d) and Appendix B to Part 101. The PNG is rendered at 300 dpi with that resolution stored in the file. Place either file at 100% scale; reducing it can take the text below the minimum type sizes.

Which label formats are not supported?

Labels for infants, for children 1 through 3 years, and for pregnant or lactating women; the simplified format of 21 CFR 101.9(f); tabular and linear displays; aggregate displays; and the reduced type sizes allowed on small packages.
