Questions

Why does the calculator round down?

The net quantity must be an accurate statement of what the package holds (21 CFR 101.7(q)). The calculator truncates instead of rounding up, so the label never states more than the contents: 454 g becomes 16 oz, not 16.1 oz.

Is the minimum letter height the same as the font size?

No. The minimum in 21 CFR 101.7(i) applies to the height of the printed letters. When upper- and lowercase letters are used, the lowercase "o" must meet it (101.7(h)(2)). A point size includes space above and below the letters, so the point size you need depends on the typeface. The calculator gives inches and millimeters only.

Do cosmetics follow the same rules?

For the statements this calculator builds, the format, abbreviations and letter-height tiers in 21 CFR 701.13 match the food rules in 101.7. Liquid cosmetics are stated at 68 °F (20 °C) under 701.13(b).

How do I measure the principal display panel?

For a rectangular panel, multiply the height by the width. For a cylindrical container, use 40 percent of the height times the circumference (21 CFR 101.1(b)) and enter the result as the area.
